Image of the Day

In case you ever wondered what's on the top of my computer at work, here you go. From left to right we have a skunk from LEXIS, a wind-up robot with googly eyes, Batgirl (she's a librarian, you know) and a magic eight-ball from a program we put on for summer associates.

There's a Hip Librarians Book Blog out there! I had no idea. Because I'm not hip, probably.

The Library of Congress has yet another stellar online exhibition for us; this one focuses on photographs from early news agencies.

The BBC features both an in-depth look at the Charles-and-Camilla marriage, including family trees and royal protocol, and also (on the other side of the spectrum) interactive games in which you can put bones or muscles together. I tried the skeleton game and was only so-so at it, which is why I'm a law librarian and not a doctor. Be very glad.

If you had to make a list of the 100 best gadgets of all time, what would make it and what would be discarded? See what others think and discuss.

WordCount examines the 86,000 most used words in the English language. I tried "folderol" and "weblog" and got nothing. "Love" comes in at number 344.

Via Librarians' Index to the Internet: the study of paleography, or old handwriting. This is super-cool stuff.

Tomorrow: links from others. Stay tuned.

(Triumphant Return of)
Image of the Day

Spring training gets truly underway this week. Woohoo!

Today we are featuring weekend plans and creepy crap, in that order.
Weekend plans: if you're in Buenos Aires, it's tango time! If you're in the midwest, you can dance to Madonna instead at Dawn's birthday party.

Creepy crap: the Thames gives up its dead reluctantly, chaos magick rites can make your life chaotic, and wow, supernatural crime is neato keen!

(Sorry for the lateness and shortness of entries lately. Folderol will soon resume its normal schedule.)

We saw our old friend Masaaki last night! Right now he's on a plane back to Tokyo, but in his honour we have JAANUS (the online Dictionary of Japanese Architectural and Art Historical Terminology - somehow you get the acronym from this, although I'm not quite sure how) and also a Sanrio role-playing online game. Yes, really!

The DIY Map is very cool. It may also be an accidental repeat posting. (Life's been kind of crazy lately and my organization skills have gone all to hell.) Ditto for the Dielectric, although it deserves a second look!

Finally, a true time-waster (in the best sense of the phrase): the Vintage Postcards Catalog. The subcategories are amazing in and of themselves!

RIP, HST.

If you had to draw something without knowing what it was, how well would you do? The results can be seen (and analyzed, if you're into that sort of thing) with the Drawing Description Game.

If you're more into three dimensional representations, check out these 3-D ski maps!

Emerging Writers is just now emerging itself, but it will soon be a fully operational site for exploring the works of new writers. Neat stuff.

For those who like to wear their nostalgia on their sleeve (or on their chest), I bring you '80s Tees. The Knight Rider section has some wicked cool stuff.
