David Duchovny has a blog for his new movie. (The reviews are pretty bad, as the Graveworm has pointed out.)

Fun at Cinema Wasteland. Butch R. Cleaver, me, and the Zombie Cheerleader hang out at the convention. (I am not in Joan E. Cleaver costume, which is why I'm hiding on the floor.) Among the people in the background is the world's fourth strangest man, believe it or not. You know what every spooky librarian needs? Haunted books, that's what! I missed the Books2Eat contest, and am very sad about it. I also missed the 1040-DOG form filing deadline of April 15. But hey, the 2005 "who reads what" list of celebrities is just now out! If you ever wondered what Face was reading in the back of the A-Team's van, now you know. Most library types know the thrill of finding obscure information...and the agony of being mocked for "knowing everything." Pamie feels our pain, being a pop culture princess and all, and now there's a t-shirt to honor (or is it label?) such people. Available only through April 30, so get yours now! If you're looking to become one of the abovementioned people, or if you're just trying to figure out an essay topic, there's a great list of ideas for writing or learning or otherwise exploring. In even more "did you know" news, learn all about the coronation of the pope and those weird clothes they wear. Local news: the Cincinnati public library has put together a Children's Program Planners network which lists performers available for programs. Neat idea. Tomorrow: links from others!
Wednesday, April 20, 2005Image of the Day ![]() The Hamtaro Conclave votes for pope. We have a winner for the previous Image of the Day! Todd guessed that it was a Hamtaro rendition of a tarot Tower card. Richard gets an honorable mention award for suggesting it was akin to Braindead 13 (it isn't, but Bunny was thrilled to be reminded of the game!). Congrats, guys! As a prize, you both get small surprise grab bags with that card (and more!), provided you're willing to email me your snail mail address. I promise not to spam you or sign you up for any bizarre cults and/or magazine subscriptions. And for the record, here's where I got the cards. It's amazing what kind of trading cards are out there these days! The only thing I'm going to say about the new pope is that he reminds me eerily of Senator Palpatine. You heard it here first, guys. In other world news: Italy has finally sent an obelisk back to Ethiopia, decades after they looted it. (How and why you would "loot" a huge obelisk is beyond me.) Dubai has created the World Islands. For a small fortune, you can live on a tiny island representing part of, say, South America. I think this would make a great location for someone's superhero (or supervillain) lair. Little India is a super-cute book depicting Ganesha, Shiva, Kali and the rest of the pantheon as little anime-like beings. I'm thinking it would be a great gift for a kid. If you don't have a babelfish and want to learn to speak alien, here's a handy lesson in xenolinguistics. If you like this, check out the related page on futurese. It's absolutely fascinating - to me, anyway. If you prefer indoor exploring, check out this huge repository of video game maps. Satori, who spent most of the blizzard of 1994 figuring out a map for some bizarre Nintendo Jurassic Park game, may be especially interested!
Tuesday, April 19, 2005Expo 2005 is going on in Japan and looks amazing (if expensive). Apparently you're not allowed to bring food into the expo, which is a shame, because I think this little lunch bag would fit in perfectly. I also think their mascots are cute, even if they look a little like dustmops. Also: have you ever wondered what sumo wrestlers eat? Well, wonder no more! Over in Copenhagen, meanwhile, street art meets hotel style at the Hotel Fox. Indoor fun: study the periodic table of comic book elements, or create your own game via Game Gardens. Outdoor fun: use SNIF to meet people through your dogs! Or avoid people and/or dogs, depending.
Monday, April 18, 2005Image/Contest of the Day/Week ![]() If you think you know what this is and what it represents, email me and win something! Artist of the week: Banksy. I love that four museums had his work up, if only for a short time. Why is the news about the Oxyrhynchus Papyri not making big headlines everywhere? People! Ancient Greek plays and poems have been unlocked! This is huge! Rosetta Stone huge! Mitch Albom was a sportswriter. Then he became a bestselling author. Now he's in big trouble. The National Lampoon's gallery of kid lit is either hilarious or disturbing, depending on your temperament. Don't say I didn't warn you. The Asian Horror Encyclopedia tells you everything you always wanted to know about symbols and legends, but were afraid to ask. Ghosts could be everywhere! Even in nostalgic t-shirts turned into pillows! Or cardboard speakers! (Well, they COULD.)
