A quick update: photos from the reformatory trip (and a few from the rest of vacation) are up on Flickr. Go! Comment!

Hi there. I'm back in town, although not back in the groove just yet. A quick update, though: no house for us. Termites and leaky roofs and mold, oh my. We are now scheming to find a way to escape to the back country and open an arty B&B/coffeehouse/art shop. (We're still in vacation mode.) Back next week. See you then!

Again? Good lord.

A quick note: we go on vacation tomorrow, first to ghost-hunt and then to explore the surrounding areas. We'll be back sometime next week, so updates will be sporadic. We will return to normal posting schedule August 2nd or 3rd!

From Matt: Columbus, Ohio passes a ban on assault weapons. Wow. (The NRA is not pleased.)

Also from Matt, as well as Zazoo: RIP, Scotty. His ashes will be sent into space!

Speaking of space, NASA has info on the (hopeful) shuttle launch, with RSS feeds as an added bonus.

Library Success is a new and interesting wiki for those of us who work in the stacks. And who knew that Dracula really just wanted a librarian all this time?

Some final random bits: weblogs find their ancestors in the journals of explorers, and pill bottles find a new look thanks to a smart graphic designer. Neat.

Have a spiffy weekend, everyone. See you sometime next week!

Check out Google's moon landing tribute today. It's even better if you zoom in all the way. Hee.

This weekend you can examine the world of the changing book or, alternatively, ponder the uncertain fate of the common banana (did you know that bananas were a different kind back in the '60s and apparently tasted much better?). Our weekend is going to be wild: the spooky librarians are joining forces with Mr. and Mrs. Graveworm to explore the Mansfield Reformatory! We'll report back if we find any ghosts.

Arrrr, they be exploring Blackbeard's sunken ship in North Carolina, matey. Arrrrr!

Some random oddities: Billy Corgan is following Ken Wilber and finding a sort of religion; monks are using high technology in order to read the ancient Codex Sinaiticus; and Phreeque celebrates the wild world of freaks - or phreeques - in a detailed, extensive site.

We may be buying a house. This is very unnerving and has thrown my routine all to hell!

Anyway. Back in the safe confines of Folderol, I direct you to purple Hostess cupcakes, courtesy of Willy Wonka. If the Chocolate Factory creeps you out, you can try some neato Harry Potter candy instead (not just the jellybeans, but much much more!). You have to love all these tie-ins between pop culture and food. I'm hoping for Fantastic Four-packs of juice or War of the Worlds squid-like sushi next.

More fun with stock photos: Yotophoto.

And last but not least, an answer to the burning question of why you can never smack houseflies, unless you are a karate kid.

First off: new design coming in August. Stay tuned.

On to music, art and books...

Music: I want to try out a String Thing. It's like the next generation of keytars!

Also, librarians are lurking in the backgrounds of orchestras and symphonies, so be nice to them. Organizing sheet music is a pain.

Art: FlickrDogs! Arf arf arf! Also, for the scientific pedants in the audience, bad moons in children's books.

Books: in a move that reminiscent of Neal Stephenson's Diamond Age, One More Story cuts out the parental aspect of reading aloud by having computers read books to kids. You never have to interact with your children if you don't want to! I'm kidding, mostly. It'd be interesting to see them do Harry Potter.
