Friday, July 23, 2004From Zazoo: "As more and more people flock to the theaters to see "Fahrenheit 911", the GOP is getting very nervous..." Also from Zazoo: "Scientists have discovered cross-dressing fish." From Daniel: "Don't buy the illegal bathtub cheese!" From Satori: The Muppets are said to be working on their own version of The Wizard of Oz. (Woohoo!) Further discussion here. From the Library Underground: buy a girlie men t-shirt. "20% of proceeds will benefit the California Democratic Party, which as you may have noticed could use the help." Hee. From Jack: "Odd 'proof' that Near Death Experiences lead to higher insight...?" From me: how to be properly emo. I had no idea. Also, the Las Vegas monorail is up and running! And finally, on a local note, a 101-year-old descendant of Lafaytette and the Longworths just died. Cincinnati history buffs, take note. Have a great weekend, everyone! See you Monday.
Thursday, July 22, 2004The webloggers are descending on the political conventions! Here's a list of who will be at the Democratic National Convention next week. It should be interesting to hear reports directly from the floor. Speaking of direct reports, the library-related site of the week is The Baghdad Biblio-Files. Live from Baghdad. Very interesting stuff. New at the Library of Congress: the Lewis Carroll Scrapbook Collection. And finally, for some fun stuff. Theme Park City features a directory of all the amusement parks, waterparks, and zoos in each state (and overseas), as well as a news log of which coaster jumped the tracks this week. (Live dangerously!) Also, from Zazoo: see Bush and Kerry sing "This Land Is Your Land." Trust me, it's worth it. Tomorrow: links from others!
Wednesday, July 21, 2004Activities this weekend: watch big men climb big trees at the World Lumberjack Championships in Wisconsin! Watch and eat big cheese in Wales! Watch the posh Swan Upping on the Thames! Better do it this year, because the aliens will be in charge next summer, and who knows what their feelings on trees, cheese and swans are.
Tuesday, July 20, 2004Actually, the first link disturbs you courtesy of the good folks at ookee.com, who originally found the site. IGargoyle focuses on transhumanism and the potential cyborging (?) of humans. Check out the Psymbiote project for more on that sort of thing. Transhumanism doesn't disturb me, but the new multi-player game Sociolotron does, a bit. I just can't see this ending well. For those bothered by bugs: a plague of locusts is attacking western Africa, and there's not much anyone can do about it. Bzzzzzz! And finally, to those of you disturbed by lawyers: quotations by lawyers in pop culture. (I'm disturbed by lawyers on a daily basis, but only in the sense of them barging in without knocking and needing things ten minutes ago. Heh.)
Monday, July 19, 2004Foetry takes on unscrupulous poetry contests. Fellow Ohio University alumni, take note: one of our English professors is listed among the judges of questionable integrity. Oh, the drama! Battleship Potemkin has a new soundtrack on the way, courtesy of the Pet Shop Boys. Yes, really! For the language geeks among us (and I include myself in this category), the MLA Language Map is a thing of beauty and complexity. Find out who's speaking what in your town! A new movie has revived interest in Cole Porter's life and music. And speaking of reviving, why not try to remember your own past life? (Thanks, Glenna!) According to the site, my last life was in 925 A.D. I'm not quite sure what I did in the thousand-year interim.
