It's been exciting here, what with the explosions of barrels containing unknown items and all...

Anyway. On to the links from others!

From Daniel: ''How can Microsoft counter open source software's ability to make a Japanese woman give birth to a horse in a convenience store?'' Yeah, that would be a tough act to follow. Also from Daniel: beware of activism during the GOP convention. I mean, the activists should beware, not the GOP.

From Satori: "I think Kerry's new slogan should be 'Are you prepared to debate with 4 DOZEN Nobel laureates?'" Hee. Also from Satori: Muppet stamps are coming in 2005! Woohoo!

From Holly: the Cat Cafe, for people entirely too involved with their pets. Also from Holly, an interesting perspective on Hurricane Charley from the BBC.

Have a spiffy weekend, everyone. See you Monday!

Attention fellow librarians! Columbine says we're sexy. It's true! We are! (It's kind of interesting to work in a profession that has its own specific fetish. Like teachers and, um, pizza delivery guys, I guess.)

First-year librarians report on what life is like in the real world. Sadly, it is not terribly sexy. I am reassured that most of them experience the same exasperating issues I did (and do) regarding red tape, traditionalists, and martyrdom. Free the bound periodicals! The revolution will be cataloged! Ahem.

Also, here's a list of interview questions that library students may be bombarded with when they venture out into the workaday world. My favorite on the list: "How are you helping your subordinates develop themselves?" My first instinct would be to spout off some smart-ass answer like "by whipping them?" Which takes us right back to the sex angle. This is why I will probably never get too far up the ladder in my professional career.

Many a librarian has looked at a pile of kids' books and thought, "I could write something better than that!" And so they did. Now there's a list of librarians who moonlight or sunlight as authors of children's books. Hooray for multitasking!

Wiki wiki wiki. Beedee beedee beedee. Hey Buck, read about the wacky world of wikis.

On to some fun things not related to libraries. Baseball, while pastoral and historical, is also big business. Now there's a site dedicated to the corporate angle of the sport -- and hey, they have a weblog as well!

Also, you can find many a scenic byway to travel this weekend. I am all about scenic byways, so this is fantastic. Ohio has a "Welsh byway," for instance. Who knew?

Tomorrow: links from others!

If you're not watching the Olympics (and incidentally, is there a way to mute individual audio tracks on a TV, so I could hear the crowd noise but not the supremely irritating NBC commentators?), this is the week to travel and experience some great festivals. There's the Reykjavik Marathon, which is tied in with the city's White Night festival; the Amsterdam Canal Festival; the Knock Shrine National Novena in Ireland (hey, maybe you'll see a vision or something); and the Weird Weekend in England, where crytozoologists plan to take over the world! Muhahaha! I want to be a cryptozoologist, actually. Do you think they need researchers?

Over in America, Chicago begins its Supernatural Tours season. Go now and beat the Halloween rush! (Then report back and tell me how it is, so we can plan a trip there!)

Dear Bunny: I know the last few nights have been rough, what with the construction going on outside and the schools starting back up and the parade o'critters taking place on the back porch. But fear not! Earlier this morning I found something which will gladden your tired heart! Love, J.

Today is a bonus links from others day! From Daniel, we have Transformers in 2005 (in disguise, no doubt), and a stormtrooper-meets-fairytale wedding. Hee.

From Glenna: Which Phase of the Greek Tragic Cycle Are You? (I am Olbos, i.e. stupidly optimistic. Which is probably spot on.)

From Holly: plastic surgery for dogs and champion fighting crickets. The world's gone mad, people.

Speaking of absurdity, why not check out the man behind the IgNobel Awards?

With the Olympics going on, it's time for another story on the Elgin Marbles. It's neverending, people! Britain still won't give them up...but they would like to rid themselves of all that annoying graffiti, speaking of art.

Bunny went to see Alien vs. Predator over the weekend. His report was that it did not suck as much as some critics were expecting, since the studio refused to preview it, but that it was not that great, either. (Really, he's just irked that the monster he wanted to win didn't. Heh.)

In other creepy movie news, making an Exorcist movie is far more wrenching than the film itself, apparently. Idealistic filmmakers will be terrified by this story!
