Katrina links:

For library/archives people: a disaster recovery/management guide. I got an email this morning detailing the level of devastation in the courthouses. The archives are probably gone forever.

For those traveling this weekend, GasBuddy shows the lowest (and highest) gas prices in your area. Right now we're between $2.45 and $3.19 per gallon here. Whee.

For those completely sick of water, Burning Man is going on out in the desert. And if you want some pure escapism, I put up some photos of last weekend's Meet Cleaver Theatre shoot.

Tomorrow: links from others. Stay tuned!

Hey all. Be sure to check the post below, which went up last night.

In more meta news, we seem to be buying a house, for real this time. Send good vibes our way on the 15th, when the closing will (hopefully, possibly, theoretically) take place. SpookyLibrarians HQ may be a little (more) chaotic (than usual) in the meantime.

How easy are you to hypnotize? Supposedly I am a 4 (out of 5, 5 being the most hypnotizable). Don't anyone try it on me - I have stuff to do!

Now it turns out that the mysterious piano man may have been having a psychotic episode. I think I liked this story better when he was a possible alien or time traveler.

So where are all these aliens, anyway? And could they have built the structure just discovered at Fort Ancient?

Numbers: the secrets they tell. (This one's for the Graveworm.)

Hey, all. Julie (aka geekjul) is part of the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, which has set up a shelter for animals left homeless by Katrina.

Our shelter for pets evacuated due to Hurricane Katrina is up and running at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. We are located in large tents in the grassy quadrangle adjacent to the Red Cross shelter. We are still accepting evacuated pets, and as always we need donations of money or supplies.

If you are an evacuated resident of the Gulf Coast and you need somewhere to house your pet, please bring them to the LSU-S campus in southeast Shreveport. Click here for a map to the location. The Humane Society has partnered with the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, the Krewe of Barkus and Meoux, Caddo Caring Canines, and Animal Welfare, Inc to set up an emergency shelter for pets of all sizes at no charge to you.

(thanks to Julie for sending this on)

The LiveJournalers are keeping tabs on what's going on in Louisana. If you've got questions about a certain area or looking for someone, this may be a good place to check.

Meanwhile, here in Cincinnati, we've got a tanker full of styrene ready to explode. And it's right by the river, too. Exciting.

When the waters subside, I think a Geek Cruise would be excellent. I wonder if I could convince the higher-ups that it would be professional development.

Bunny sent in a list of the Worst TV Videogames of all time. Relive the excitement of Knight Rider and Wheel of Fortune in pixelated form! (Thanks, Bunny!)

If you're addicted to video games, especially the old school format, why not wear some on your wrist? Fossil has an Asteroids watch, with Centipede and Breakout to follow soon!

(I really like Fossil's robot clock, too. It's very steampunk.)

What would the Gallifrey underground system look like? Extremely complicated, no doubt. (Do they give out free jelly bellys on the ride?)

In baseball geek news, you can vote for players on the Latino Legends Team. About 25% of MLB players are Latino, and it's time they got recognized.

Yikes. Good luck to all those in Katrina's path.

Cool artist of the week: Zaelia Bishop!

I had no idea there was an actual Chateau d'If, as depicted in The Count of Monte Cristo. In other author news, Monterey just paid tribute to author Robert Louis Stevenson, who lived there for a time, and Nabokov's Lolita turns 50 this year.

For something totally lighthearted, check out the names of Disney characters in other languages. Some stay the same, but some are much more entertaining!

(This entry was brought to you by Wikipedia, evidently. More variety tomorrow.)
