Godspeed, Lynn. I hope you're teaching people to sing wherever you are now.

Also! New contest at Meet Cleaver Theatre! Answer the questions and win fabulous prizes! Deadline is Sept. 23, so act now!

Bits and pieces to end the week:

From Zazoo: The latest poll from Zogby is out, and Bush now has a lower approval rating than Nixon did.

Lexis is offering a free part of their news site for Katrina-related resources.

Flickr is holding an auction of prints - the money will go toward helping Katrina victims.

Found on ookee.com: What designer drug would you be? I was ketamine. Ew.

Cambridge in Colour is just beautiful.

The BBC listed a bunch of ad cliches, and people wrote in with some of their own as well. There's a U.S. discussion of bad ads going on over in Seattle, too. (I have lots of friends in advertising, so this stuff is interesting!)

And finally, for no reason at all...the Cookie Sutra.

Have a good and safe weekend, everyone. See you Monday.

The Katrina timeline. To sum up, the federal government was (is?) useless.

LII, librarian resource extraordinaire, has a page of Katrina-related information. It's very comprehensive and high-quality.

In addition to everything else, the hurricane and levee breaks have caused an archival disaster. Archivists are trying to get to NOLA and other affected cities with equipment to rescue what they can...but the feds aren't letting them in. Gah.

Today, the Redfish restaurants are having a benefit dinner. The restaurants are in Chicago, Cincinnati, and throughout Arizona, so if you live near any of those places, consider getting some jambalaya for dinner and helping out.

In non-Katrina news: who knew the OED had monthly newsletters? They even have one devoted to library researchers. Now that would be an awesome job.

I'm always going on about the Elgin marbles, but here's something different: the Elgin dinosaurs. Different Elgin, obviously. Go and see the dinosaurs out and about in the town!

And finally...I know everyone is pretty well taxed out on sending prayers and goodwill and good vibes these days, but if you have any spare ones lying about please send them to our family friend Lynn, who got caught in an undertow last night and is in critical condition near Philadelphia. Thanks.

(the moral of this summer seems to be: don't go near the water...)

Dear New Orleans: an open letter that you can add to if you wish. (Thanks for the link, Bell.) I haven't said much on the whole disaster because really, if I said what I thought about the federal response, I'd be taken away by men in black straightaway. It's just appalling.

Over in England, strange animals are showing up - in a pattern, no less - and milk is being stolen by an illiterate. Is nothing sacred? (They still deliver milk in England? Wow.)

The Toast Leaners Club is not affiliated with the Sandwich Project, but I think they should be.

The Piri Reis map is intricate and amazing and fasincating and many other adjectives. I'd never heard of it before.

To end on a goofy note: MST3K-inspired paintings!

Okay, yeah, I said there would be a new design in August, and now it's September. I suck. It's on its way, really.

In the meantime...

Laser harps and sonic fabric. Ooooh. Ahhhhh.

A new Swedish skyscraper twists 90 degrees - on purpose. It's only a matter of time before our skylines look like something out of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Hooray!

Flickr Magazine - helping pranksters everywhere. Design your own lovely/obnoxious/inexplicable cover.

Nancy Drew is turning 75 (wow, she looks good for her age) and there's a symposium to celebrate. I think people should dress up like Nancy Drew characters for it, a la Harry Potter. (I don't see any mention of how Nancy Drew influenced the Powerpuff Girls - tough brunette, airheaded blonde, smart redhead. Get on that, people.)

Henry Higgins would be thrilled to hear that Cockney accents may be disappearing...and then he would be mortified to learn that Bangladeshi phrases are what's influencing the change. Hee. (The BBC "Voices" site is fascinating.)
