Friday, September 23, 2005From Zazoo: Our alma mater of OU seems to be on the decline, or going through a rough patch, or something. Meanwhile, the other Athens is trying to preserve its musical heritage. From Holly: the Nazi exploding chocolate plan. It didn't work out so well. Taken verbatim from email: 'a political commentary from Dr. Matt the Commenter about the Vatican’s ban of gay priests at seminaries and other places . . . .to paraphrase Whitney Houston (huh?!?!?!?), KISS MY ASS!!!!!' New discoveries at Odd Books Inc.: Atomic's Bible, which covers much more than atoms; My Hapai Machine, about UFOs, and The Twentieth Plane, a sort of "psychic revelation" which seems to have sent most people a bit mad. Have a good and safe weekend, everyone! We're moving into the new Spooky Librarians HQ today (and unpacking all weekend). I used to think moving was fun. I think I used to be insane. After nine moves in eleven years, it's become more like an ordeal than an adventure. But hey! We shall persevere, and maybe even throw a party soon. See you Monday.
Thursday, September 22, 2005TangognaT has a librarian appellation generator thingy going on. Here's mine: "You're a swank storyteller cyborg with dust allergies. You are found enchanting by opportunistic mentally disturbed people from another dimension. Be proud of what you are...You are a Librarian!" (Keep clicking if you don't like your first label.) I don't think what Google Print is doing is that bad, and I also don't see what's so terrible about the "Desperate Librarians" calendar. Many other librarians are shocked and appalled by both of the above. If the gloomy forecast of Peak Libraries comes to pass, I suppose I'll be one of the first up against the wall. And for something completely different: singing lawyers. Yay! Tomorrow: links from others.
Wednesday, September 21, 2005In happier, non-hurricane times, beach houses are where it's at. The signs can be great, too. This weekend brings the annual World of Wearable Art competition in New Zealand and the Icarus Cup in France. If you're nowhere near either country, you can...um...make an X-wing fighter out of a subway ticket. Whee! Spooky fun: RavensBlight has more strange and beautiful paper creations, amidst many other pages at which to oooh and ahhhh; Seattle filmmakers take on Cthulhu; and hey! look! cool rats for sale! But act fast, the sale ends on the 23rd.
Tuesday, September 20, 2005Being a member of the church of baseball can be frustrating, to put it mildly. That's why it's a brilliant idea to make motivational posters for each and every team. Broken into two parts, one over at Red Hot Mama and the other at Reds (and Blues). They're not only hilarious, but frighteningly appropriate for each team. Mascots can provide motivation, too...but what happens when the team moves town and abandons its mascot? Former Expos mascot Youppi! (yes, the exclamation point is part of his name) has found a new home in the world of hockey. The new Canadiens mascot is the first of its kind to jump from one sport to another. Go Youppi!! If Youppi! hadn't gone over to the NHL, he might have auditioned for America's Next Muppet. Man, I hope this airs next year. It'll be the best show ever! More Muppet news: the Museum of Television and Radio is holding "Fifty Years of Fabulous: Celebrating The Jim Henson Company's 50th Anniversary" programs in both New York and Los Angeles this Saturday. For those of us in the middle of the country, meanwhile, there are the Henson stamps coming out next week. (For movie buffs, a Garbo stamp is debuting this week.)

There's all sorts o' features on t' "official" site, includin' a pirate-to-English (and pirate-to-German) translation function. Arrrrrr. ARRRRRRRRR!
