Friday, December 03, 2004And now, on to the links. Thanks, everyone! From Satori: Godzilla gets his/her own star on the walk of fame. I love the fact that the actor who plays Godzilla is shorter than I am. From Holly: "There's a new reality show in the UK that is a spelling bee-type show. To promote it they have a game, and also a quiz with the article." I got a 38 on the game and a 7 on the quiz. (I also learned that I have been spelling a certain word wrong forever, apparently. Oops.) From Daniel: a simple guide to eating sushi. Also, McRorie One Man Live! From the Graveworm: proof that the Cult of Sanrio has gone a wee bit too far with all this Hello Kitty stuff. Have a great weekend, everyone. See you Monday!
Thursday, December 02, 2004I just discovered the Yahoo Buzz weblog (or is it a column?). I think writing this would be the coolest job ever. Almost as cool as my original dream job, which was writing the questions & answers column for Smash Hits. Speaking of jobs -- if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Here's a look at the best Federal jobs to have. Not surpisingly for anyone who grew up wanting to be an astronaut, NASA is apparently the best place to work. (Detail-oriented people are especially desirable, I would think.) OCLC has some really cool little extras that go beyond the basic cataloging business. Fiction Finder got mentioned here before, but it seems a lot slicker now. And you can watch - in real time, no less! - as a record is added to OCLC every ten seconds or so. Okay, well, I think it's cool. Your mileage may vary according to your level of geekiness. Another always cool repository of information, the Library of Congress, has some new exhibits online as well. One is a collection of World War I era rotogravures, while another explores the LoC itself during a particularly tumultuous time of change. Lastly, a journalist thinks that the answer to society - and the problem of declining library circulation - is combining books and coffee. I can't really argue with that theory, although it seems odd that no one seems to be overly worried about coffee stains on library books. Tomorrow: lots of links from others. Stay tuned.
Wednesday, December 01, 2004 World AIDS Day 2004. My personal thoughts are over in the entry I originally wrote for Backwash, then reprinted on life's not a paragraph. I keep hoping this will be outdated someday. Also, if you'd like a bracelet, the Until There's a Cure organization sells them.
Tuesday, November 30, 2004Relive Thanksgivings past with X-Entertainment's look at Macy's parades of old. It is a standing family joke that I always complained about missing parades when I was young (because inevitably we were on the road traveling somewhere), and now I never see them because I sleep too late. Here's yet another reason to consider getting that cute stray from the animal shelter: dogs can sense cancer. It's true! No word yet on whether they can also sense the imminent explosion of a cell phone, but who knows? They may also have been able to diagnose restless legs as a sign of iron deficiency, too, if they could only talk. Space 2010: Operation To The Moon! At this rate, we should be able to start interstellar colonization by the year 4000 or so. Sigh. And finally, your moment of zen: the Yale vs. Harvard rivalry prank for 2004.
