Thursday, December 30, 2004From Zazoo: Forget DJing; MP3Jing is the new ubercool. From Satori: David Lynch and Andy Warhol make it into the National Film Registry. Well, their films do, at any rate. From Daniel: "Kyoto University has started a collection of english-translated versions of otogizoshi, classic japanese fairytales, the most common source of inspiration for stories in japanese anime and movies (even giant robots/automatons)." From the Worm: What '80s band are you? He was the Pixies. Inexplicably, I was Soft Cell. Great Museums, part 87: there's the Computer Museum in California, the Holography Collection at MIT, and the Pharmacy Museum in New Orleans! Can you plow the streets of Boston with your trusty snowplow? I sure couldn't. Mr. Plow's job is safe for another winter, I believe. Odd collections and concepts: the Historical Novel Society not only exists, they have an annual convention. Also, there's a Homeless Research Virtual Library, and a historical collection of photos in which boys are wearing girls' clothes. Gender identity issues were apparently not a concern. Then there's the Luther Blissette Explosion Experiment, which is just plain bizarre. Blinkx searches video for you. Cool! If you're as sick as I am of those magnet ribbons on cars, rejoice in this lovely parody site. Bunny has already made up a few of his own. (I won't tell you what they are, because this is a family-friendly page. Heh.) You may remember the first Child's Play review, in which the urchins of today reviewed the video games of yesterday. They're back for a sequel, which is just as funny. My favorite line by far is by a kid dumbstruck by the concept of having to start all over with another quarter when you lost at an arcade: "And you guys back then were OK with this?" And finally, in honor of the end of 2004, check out the Google Zeitgeist, which lists the most popular search terms of the year. Have a great and safe New Year's Eve, everyone!
Wednesday, December 29, 2004The Call of Cthulhu movie is coming, and we are excited! In a related vein, H.P. Lovecraft's belief (or lack thereof) in the paranormal is discussed in a recent Fortean Times article. London is home to the "magnificent seven" graveyards, and I had no idea. Clearly, we need to go on a quest. Spacesuits! Nothing but real-life spacesuits! Graveworm, please note that there is a "tomato worm" spacesuit listed. (Er?) And finally, for the conspiracy theorists (or the oft-enraged at drugstores): a hint to what those inexplicable pharmacy codes really mean.
Tuesday, December 28, 2004A few years ago at this time, we were getting ready to go to Disney World. Ah, memories. In honor of that trip, here's some interesting information on how the Haunted Mansion is designed and what sorts of feelings the architecture of Disney is meant to evoke in visitors. Out in the real world, the Space Invaders are everywhere! This is an amazing site which tells the story of one man's determination to invade each city with little Space Invader tags, with maps and shoes and everything. It's great. Go look! Now! Now that the holidays are almost over, I'm cleaning out bookmarks to sites which had stuff I'd thought about getting Bunny. So hey there, Bunny, would you have wanted anything from the DNA Store? Or how about some emergency cufflinks? (I seriously thought about getting the bolt cufflinks. They look very Frankensteinesque.)
Monday, December 27, 2004More in the raw and severe images department: Purple Hearts is an online gallery of soldiers who were wounded in Iraq. In more cheerful images, here's a series of photos showing how one transports a 747 through the canals to the Aviodrome aviation museum in Amsterdam. Can you imagine looking out your window and seeing this go by? The Wooster Collective celebrates street art. And there's a lot to celebrate! If you've ever had communication problems via email, you are not alone. Hence, the invention of the sarcasm point. (I don't think this will really help matters, but it may confuse everyone for a while, at least.) Electrohype is going on in Sweden right now, and it looks pretty amazing. Check out the various exhibits.
